before you start   up

Before setting up Windows XP dial-up networking, you must have the following hardware and software components:

division breaker Windows XP
division breaker 16MB of RAM minimum
division breaker Modem (28.8 preferred)

If you want to access the Internet, you also need a browser, such as Netscape 4.x or Internet Explorer 4.x.

Make sure you have your original Windows CD-ROM. You may need to access files on the CD-ROM during setup.

installing dial-up networking   up

  1. If you are using the XP display mode select Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections.

    If you are using the Classic display mode select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network Connections.

    Under Network Tasks select "Create a new connection".

    Note: if you are prompted for location information and name, please enter your area code and "home" and select OK.

    On the New Connection Wizard screen, select NEXT.

  2. On the Network Connection Type screen, select Connect to the network at my workplace and select NEXT.

  3. On the Network Connection screen, select Dial-up-connection and select NEXT.

  4. On the Connection Name prompt screen, type in "SU-Dial" without the quotes, and select NEXT.

  5. On the Phone Number to Dial prompt screen, enter 443-4804 and select NEXT.
    NOTE: if dialing from a campus phone line, please enter 3-4804.

  6. On the Completing the New Connection Wizard screen, select Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop and select FINISH.

  7. The Connect SU-Dial login box should appear.

    Select Properties.

  8. The SU-Dial Properties box should appear.

    Select the Security panel.

  9. On the Security panel, select Show terminal window.

  10. Select the Networking panel.

    From the Networking panel, the only connection type that should be enabled is Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Deselect the other connection types where possible, but DO NOT UNINSTALL any connection type. NOTE: some connection types cannot be altered.

  11. Select OK to close the SU-Dial Properties box.

  12. Select CANCEL from the Connect SU-Dial login box.

  13. Restart your computer.

To connect to SU-Dial:

  1. Double click your SU-Dial desktop shortcut icon

    or�

    • If you are using the XP display mode select Start > Connect To > SU-Dial.
    • If you are using the Classic display mode select Start > Settings > Network Connections > SU-Dial.

  2. Clear User name and Password fields, then select DIAL.

  3. The After Dial Terminal window should appear.

    From the After Dial Terminal window screen, enter your SUnix username and press ENTER; then enter your Sunix password and press ENTER.

  4. The SUDIAL1> prompt should appear.

    At the prompt type "ppp" without the quotes and press ENTER.

  5. Select DONE.

  6. A new icon should appear on the system tray showing the connection.

  7. To disconnect from SU-Dial, right click on system tray SU-Dial connection symbol and select DISCONNECT.

NOTE internet explorer   up

The first time that Internet Explorer is launched it opens an Internet connection wizard, even if the client is already connected via a dial-up networking connection. You are presented with three choices. Choose the bottom one: My computer is already setup for the Internet. Do not show this choice again.

additional information   up

Once you have a successful network connection, you can browse the Internet with a browser, such as Netscape (free of charge with the McAfee Anti-Virus CD-ROM at the SU Bookstore) or Internet Explorer, which may already be installed on your computer. Start either of these applications after you have successfully connected to SUdial.
