before you start
Before setting up Windows 95/98 dial-up networking, you must have the following hardware
and software components:
Windows 95/98
16MB of RAM minimum
Modem (28.8 preferred)
If you want to access the Internet, you also need a browser, such as Netscape 4.x or Internet
Explorer 4.x.
Make sure you have your original Windows CD-ROM. You may need to access files on
the CD-ROM during setup.
NOTE: The figures included with the following instructions represent Windows 98. The procedures are the
same for both Windows 95 and 98, except where noted.

installing dial-up networking
- Double-click My Computer on your Windows desktop.
The My Computer window opens.

If you see the Dial-Up Networking folder in the window, you already have the adapter installed.
Close the My Computer window, and continue to Setting Up TCP/IP
Protocol.
If you do not see the Dial-Up Networking folder, you need to install the adapter. Close the My
Computer window, and continue to step 2.
- Select Settings>Control Panel from the Start menu to open the Control Panel.

- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
The Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box opens.

- Select the Windows Setup tab and double-click Communications in the Components field
(Figure 3).

- Confirm that Dial-Up Networking is checked.
- Click OK to close the Communications dialog box.
- In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click OK to start the Dial-Up Networking
installation (Figure 3).
- Click OK to close the selection box.
- If prompted, type the following information, and click Close:
Computer Name: your name
Workgroup: your SUnix userid;
Computer Description: make and model of your computer
- If asked for your Windows CD-ROM, insert it into the CD-ROM drive and follow the prompts.
- Restart your computer.
NOTE The installation and setup will not be activated until you restart your computer.
After the computer shuts down and restarts, Windows 98 users may be prompted for a user name and password.
Either enter you user name and password in the dialog box that opens or click Cancel.
- Continue to "Setting Up TCP/IP Protocol."

setting up TCP/IP protocol
- If the Control Panel is not open, select Start>Settings>Control Panel to open it (Figure 2).
- Double-click Network to open the Network dialog box.

If you see "Dial-Up Adapter" and "TCP/IP" or "TCP/IP Dial-Up Adapter,"
continue to step 5.
If you do not see either of these components, you need to add them. Continue to step 3.
- On the Configuration tab, click Add and then double-click Protocol in the Select
Network Component Type dialog box.
- In the Select Network Protocol dialog box, select Microsoft in the Manufacturers area,
select TCP/IP in the Network Protocols area, and click OK to return to the Network
dialog box (Figure 5).
- Remove all entries except "TCP/IP" and "Dial-Up Adaper" or "TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter" (Figure 5).
To remove other entries, select a component and click Remove.
NOTE Be sure to remove the Microsoft Family logon component.
- Confirm that "Windows Logon" appears in the Primary Network Logon field (Figure 5).
- Select TCP/IP or TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter (whichever one appears) and click
Properties.
- When the TCP/IP Properties Information warning message appears, click OK.

- On the IP Address tab, select Obtain an IP address automatically (Figure 7).
- Select the DNS Configuration tab and continue to Configuring Your DNS.

configuring your DNS
- On the TCP/IP Properties-DNS Configuration tab, select Enable DNS (Figure 8).
- Type your name or SUnix userid in the Host field.
- Type "syr.edu" in the Domain field.
- Type "128.230.12.5" in the DNS Server Search Order field and click Add.
The number appears in the field below.
- Type "128.230.1.49" in the DNS Server Search Order field and click Add.
- Type "syr.edu" in the Domain Suffix Search Order field and click Add.
- Click OK to return to the Network dialog window.
- Click OK to accept the changes you have made and to close the Network dialog box
(Figure 5).
After you click OK, a window appears that reads, "Your network is not complete. Do you want
to continue?" Click Yes to continue and go to the Control Panel (Figure 1).
You may also be asked to insert your Windows CD-ROM so that the necessary files can be copied
onto your hard drive.
- Close the My Computer and Control Panel windows if they are still open and restart your
computer.
You have now fully installed Dial-Up Networking and are ready to configure it to connect to SUdial.
- Continue to "Configuring for SUdial."

configuring for sudial
- Double-click the My Computer icon on your Desktop.
The My Computer window opens (Figure 1).
- Double-click Dial-Up Networking.
In Windows 95, the Make New Connection dialog box opens, which looks similar to Figure 10. Skip to
step 4.
In Windows 98, the Dial-Up Networking wizard opens.

- Click Next.

NOTE: If your modem was properly installed, your modem type will appear in the modem box.
Do not change the modem type.
- Type "sudial" in the top field for the computer that you are dialing and click
Next.
- In the next window, type "315" for the area code.
From on campus, type "3-4804" for the SUdial telephone number and click Next.
From off campus, type "443-4804" for the SUdial telephone number and click Next.
- When you get a message stating that your connection has been successfully created, click
Finish.
The SUdial icon appears in the Dial-Up Networking window.

- Right-click the SUdial icon and select Properties.

- On the General tab, click Configure.

- Select the Options tab, select Bring up terminal window after dialing, and
click OK.
- On the sudial dialog box, click the Server Types tab and select Enable software
compression and TCP/IP.
Deselect any other selected options.

- Select the following options if they are not already selected:
Server assigned IP address
Sever assigned name server addresses
Use IP header compression
Use default gateway on remote network
- Click OK to return to the sudial dialog box (Figure 14) and click OK.
- Continue to "Connecting to the Network."

connecting to the network (sudial)
- Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop to open the My Computer window
(Figure 1).
- Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon to open the Dial-Up Networking window
(Figure 11).
- Right-click the SUdial icon and select Connect (Figure 11).

- Click Connect.
NOTE: Do not enter your SUnix username and password. If you use that option to
connect automatically, you will not get a ppp connection that allows you to connect to the
Internet.
The Connecting to sudial status box opens.
When you have successfully connected, the Post-Dial Terminal Screen opens.

- Type your SUnix userid and press Enter. Type your password and press Enter.
- At the sudial> prompt, type "ppp" and press Enter.
- As soon as a series of characters begin to pass across the Post Dial Terminal window,
click Continue.
The Connection Established window opens. Read this screen carefully, it contains useful
information.

- To disconnect from SUdial, double-click the Networking icon and select
Disconnect.
NOTE: The Networking icon is the image in the lower-right corner of your desktop on
the task bar next to the the clock that looks like two linked computers.

NOTE internet explorer
The first time that Internet Explorer is launched it opens an Internet connection wizard,
even if the client is already connected via a dial-up networking connection. You are
presented with three choices. Choose the bottom one: My computer is already setup for the
Internet. Do not show this choice again.

additional information
Once you have a successful network connection, you can browse the Internet with a browser,
such as Netscape (free of charge with the McAfee Anti-Virus CD-ROM at the SU Bookstore) or
Internet Explorer, which may already be installed on your computer. Start either of these
applications after you have successfully connected to SUdial.
