Built-In Wireless Capability in Laptop Computers

The minimum level of wireless capabilities recommended for AirOrange is known as 802.11b/g or 802.11g. Any laptop computer that has built-in wireless capability that was purchased during the past couple of years will likely meet the minimum standard. Some laptop computers come with 802.11a or can be upgraded to 802.11a at the time of purchase at a minimal cost to the consumer. ITS highly recommends this upgrade as it enables clients to take advantages of 802.11a capabilities (faster speeds and less prone to interference). These cards are also sometimes referred to as 802.11a/b/g.

Add-on Cards

It is possible to add wireless capability to most laptop computers that are not equipped with a wireless card, provided there is an available slot within the laptop. Clients who need to purchase a card are urged to purchase an 802.11a or 802.11a/b/g for the reasons stated above.

ITS does not support 802.11n cards, nor does ITS support any of the other technologies advertised in consumer electronics publications that are not Wi-Fi certified. Cards other than those recommended on this Web page will not work correctly on the AirOrange network. AirOrange only supports WiFi-certified products. For a complete list of WiFi-certified products can be found on the Web at www.wi-fi.org (click on the link for "Wi-Fi Certified Products).
