Wireless Network Standards

AirOrangeX, Syracuse University's high-speed wireless network provides an encrypted secure connection (802.1x) to the SU network. The wireless network is now available in all University residential facilities, South Campus apartments, and in many University buildings located both on and off campus.

Compared to AirOrange, the older wireless network, AirOrangeX is:

  • More secure,
  • Faster,
  • Easier to use, and
  • Eliminates the need for clients to login every time they connect to the wireless network (unless the NetID password is changed). The system automatically logs clients onto AirOrangeX.

Using AirOrangeX for the First Time

The first time you use AirOrangeX, you must configure your laptop computer for 802.1x technology. Follow these steps the first time you use AirOrangeX:

  • Enable your computer for wireless networking, and search for available wireless networks. Consult your computer's user manual or help system for instructions, if needed.
  • Connect to the "AirOrangeHelp" wireless network.
  • Open your web browser and type in http://airorangehelp.syr.edu
  • Type in your NetID and password
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to download the appropriate 802.1x configuration tool.

IMPORTANT NOTES: AirOrange (the older wireless network) may provide a better (and in some cases the only) network connection for some hand-held devices such as PDAs and smartphones. Connect to the wireless network through the AirOrange web access at http://airorange.syr.edu.

University guests and campus visitors cannot connect to AirOrangeX. Guests and visitors may connect to the wireless network through the AirOrange web access at http://airorange.syr.edu.
