1. Start Apple Mail and go to Apple Mail's Preferences.
  2. If you previously set up an SU OrangeMail POP e-mail account in Apple Mail, you can't convert it to IMAP. Don't choose "Remove this old account" or you will have trouble viewing your old mail. You will have to set the old OrangeMail POP e-mail account to stop checking mail. Select the account description and click on the Edit button. Select the Advanced tab and uncheck the Include when automatically checking for new mail box. Click OK.
  3. Click the Add Account button on the right.
  4. A new dialog will come up. Select the Account Information tab.
  5. Set the Account Type: to IMAP.
  6. In the Description box, enter a name for this account (for example, MyMail).
  7. In the E-mail Address box, type your NetID plus @syr.edu (for example, mynetid2@syr.edu). This is your e-mail address.
  8. In the Full Name box, type your full name as you want it to appear in messages you send out. You can use both upper- and lowercase letters here.
  9. In the Incoming Mail Server box, type IMAP-SERVER.SYR.EDU.
  10. In the User name box, type your NetID (for example, mynetid2).
  11. In the Password box, type your NetID password.
  12. Select Add Server in the Outgoing Mail Server box. A new dialog will come up.
  13. In the Outgoing Mail Server box, type SMTP-HOST.SYR.EDU.
  14. Check the box in front of "Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)".
  15. In the Authentication box, select Password.
  16. In the User name box, type your NetID (for example, mynetid2).
  17. In the Password box, type your NetID password.
  18. Click OK.
  19. Now select the Advanced tab.
  20. Check the boxes for Enable this account and Include when automatically checking for new mail.
  21. Click on the Choose button to select your mail directory only if you want to use a directory other than the default directory, which is your home directory on the Mac followed by /Library/Mail.
  22. Under Keep copies of messages for offline viewing, select the option you would like to use.
  23. Click OK, then close the Accounts dialog box.

Note: If you are off campus, your internet service provider (ISP) may not allow outgoing mail to be sent through SMTP-HOST.SYR.EDU. In that case, please consult your ISP for the proper outgoing mail settings or connect to the Syracuse University VPN before using your e-mail client.
