The University NetID provides access to a variety of computing services, depending on the client's status or role within the University. Services include:
  • E-mail
  • SU public computer labs
  • ITS Unix system servers
  • MySlice Web Portal (http://myslice.syr.edu)
  • Blackboard.syr.edu
  • VPN
  • Wireless
Who is eligible for a NetID?

NetIDs are created for:

  • Applicants for admission to Syracuse University
  • Current non-matriculated students (as defined by the Registrar)
  • Current faculty and staff (as defined by Human Resources)
  • Spouses and dependents of faculty, staff, and students
  • Retired faculty and staff

How long is the NetID available?

Applicants:

Applicants to Syracuse University may only use their NetID to access the University portal, MySlice. NetIDs assigned to applicants who decide to not attend SU are removed in the fall semester for which they applied.

Students:

Applicants that become students at SU have their access changed to include such things as e-mail, wireless and wired network services, and access to computer labs. The same access is granted to non-matriculated (University College) students. Student NetIDs are available for roughly one year after the last term of attendance.

Students under judicial suspension may lose access to e-mail and other SU computing services.

IMPORTANT NOTE: ITS recommends that students forward their @syr.edu e-mail to a non-SU e-mail address (gmail, AOL, hotmail, etc.) as soon after graduation as possible. To forward your e-mail, go to http://netid.syr.edu, click on "manage NetID" and follow the directions on the screen.

Faculty and Staff:

Current faculty and staff should expect to have access to their NetID throughout their employment at Syracuse University. Access to certain administrative and academic information systems are governed by data custodians/administrators of those systems.

Spouses, dependents, and domestic partners of faculty, staff, and students (referred to as dependent in this document)

Access to computing systems for this population is dependent upon the faculty, staff, or student's status at the University. (If the dependent is or becomes a student, faculty, or staff, the rules for student, faculty and staff will apply.)

Retired faculty and staff

Access to systems that require a NetID are contingent upon exit agreements made with Human Resources and/or the department of employment.

Notable exceptions:

Although Blackboard uses the NetID/password combination for authentication, access to courses or data within the Blackboard system is limited to those administering or enrolled in the defined Blackboard courses or, in the case of Blackboard Organizations, access is limited to those who are defined as members of the specific Blackboard organization.

Likewise, MySlice uses the NetID/password combination for authentication; however, access to services within MySlice is dependent upon the the client's role or position within the University, or student status.

In addition, schools, colleges, and departments may also use the NetID/password for authentication to specialized services and computing resource within the unit. Access to those systems is often restricted and governed by the school, colleges, and departments.
