The UNIX-based personal web page server called web.syr.edu is scheduled for removal in 2009.
Active students, faculty and staff who wish to migrate content from their web.syr.edu sites
to MySite can do so by following the general procedure outlined below.
Note: If you wish to migrate your web.syr.edu site using a non-ITS lab
computer, go to the page "Migrating web.syr.edu page to MySite using non-lab computer"
Migration Steps
- Login to a public lab computer.
- Navigate to Start > Programs > Accessories > Secure File Transfer Client
- Click Quick Connect
- Enter gamera.syr.edu for Host Name
- Enter your SU NetID for User Name
- Click Connect
- Click Yes to save the host key to the local database if prompted
- Enter your NetID password when prompted
- On gamera.syr.edu screen
- Click the New Folder icon to create a new local folder and give it a name, e.g. sunixweb.
- Navigate to this folder by double-clicking on it.
- In the Remote Name frame, navigate to the public_html folder by double-clicking on it.
- Select items in the Remote Name frame, and drag them to the Local Name frame.
- Perform procedure "Accessing MySite Web using Windows XP" to set up a WebDAV network place.
- Copy the files you downloaded in Step 4 above to the My Network Places by dragging the files into the MySite window.
- Delete the default.htm file. (The default.htm file is a temporary web page that was created when you set up your MySite space. Deleting this file will allow your migrated web page to appear.)
- Load the url http://your-netid.mysite.syr.edu in a browser window.
- Check the links on your website to make sure they resolve properly.
- If links are broken, edit the appropriate files on your local computer, and then re-copy them to the My Network Places.
