The UNIX-based personal web page server called web.syr.edu is scheduled for removal in 2009. Active students, faculty and staff who wish to migrate content from their web.syr.edu sites to MySite can do so by following the general procedure outlined below.

Note: If you wish to migrate your web.syr.edu site using an ITS lab computer, go to the page "Migrating web.syr.edu page to MySite using lab computer".

In order to complete these steps, you will need:

Migration Steps

  1. Set up your MySite web space by following the instructions at Create your MySite account.

  2. Set up the connection to manage your MySite content by following the instructions at Create your MySite connection.

  3. Copy web documents to your local drive
    • Use your FTP application to download copies of your web documents from your web.syr.edu site to a folder on your computer.
    • Your FTP application will require you to supply connection information to perform this download.
    • The following table contains some of the values that you may need to enter:

    Host Name gamera.syr.edu
    User Name your NetID
    Password your NetID password
    Port Number 22
    File Transfer Mode Auto detect
    Remote folder public_html

  4. Copy web documents from local drive to MySite
    • Copy the content you downloaded in step 3 to your WebDAV drive/Network Place.
    • Delete the default.htm file. (The default.htm file is a temporary web page that was created when you set up your MySite space. Deleting this file will allow your migrated web page to appear.)

  5. Verification
    • Load your MySite web site at http://your-netid.mysite.syr.edu with a browser.
    • Test to make sure the site works properly.
    • To fix broken links and file references, you may edit the web content you saved on your computer and then recopy the content to your MySite space.
