Student Antivirus Program
Syracuse University requires all computers connected to the University's wired or wireless networks
be protected by a current version of antivirus software. Students should choose from the University's
list of recommended antivirus software.
The University's version of McAfee antivirus software can be installed free of charge on student
computers under the following conditions:
Residential students:
- McAfee will automatically be installed during the computer registration process when no
antivirus software is detected on student-owned computers.
- Residential students who need McAfee reinstalled on their computers should go to an ITS
Student Computing Support Center.

Students living off campus:
Off-campus students are required to purchase antivirus software for their computers. They
should choose from the University's list of recommended
antivirus software. The University's version of McAfee is not available as a free download to
students living off campus.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
- Many new computers come with trial or demonstration versions of antivirus software. These trial versions do not meet SU requirements. Students need to verify that the antivirus software installed on their computer is a fully licensed version.
- Students who accept the University's version of McAfee antivirus software must completely uninstall all other versions of antivirus software (including non-SU versions of McAfee) currently running on the computer. Failure to uninstall other versions of antivirus software can result in incompatibility issues that may make your computer slow or inoperable.
