Requirements for Remote Access

If you are unable to work at your normal SU work location due to sickness or caregiving, and need expedited remote access to the University’s systems and/or data in order to work from home or other site, follow the steps below.  If you need remote access for reasons other than sickness or caregiving, click here.

Employees seeking to access confidential and/or enterprise data from an off-campus machine need to request approval from their department and attend a Remote Access Training session within 30 days of submitting the request.  For specific information on the University’s Policy 004.001, Secure Remote Access, see http://supolicies.syr.edu/it/remote_access.htm.

  1. Employees must complete and submit the online Remote Access Request form to request approval of remote access. A link to this form is at the bottom of this page.
  2. The employee will discuss with their department’s designated authorizer the operating system of the off-campus machine and the type of access needed. Click here for a list of authorizers by department.  For specific information on Requirements for Remote Access to University Data see http://its.syr.edu/security/remoteaccess/standards.cfm.
  3. Once approved, the employee will register for Remote Access Training within 30 days of submitting the request. If the employee's remote access request is not approved, the process ends and training is not required.
  4. When the employee submits the online form, it is automatically emailed to the department’s authorizer(s) and others who may be designated by the department. A copy of the email will be sent to the employee’s official syr.edu email address.  Employees can securely access their SU email from off campus using Outlook Web Access (OWA)
  5. The department Information Coordinator enters a FAST request using the Prod Remote Access Form.
  6. A FAST Remote Access confirmation is sent to the employee. The approval e-mail will contain instructions for using remote access.
  7. SU’s Information Security group will follow up via email to the employee with instructions for registering for Remote Access Training.  Employees who fail to register for training within thirty (30) days of submitting an approved request will lose their remote access.

Free phone support for remote access-related problems is available during normal University business hours for employees using the supported remote access hardware and software. Call (315) 443-2677.
