Connecting to the SU network
Students who live in Syracuse University residential facilities on North and South campuses can
connect to the Internet either through SU's wired (Ethernet) network or through the wireless
AirOrange network. Once connected, students can:
- Send and receive e-mail
- Use Instant Messenger
- Access the SU web site and SU web-based services, such as MySlice and Blackboard
- Access the World Wide Web
- Participate in the online gaming community
- Access personal web pages and files stored on the SU network
- Connect to SU Library resources
In order to connect to the University's network, students must have activated
their NetID and created a NetID password. In addition, Syracuse
University requires all computers connected to the University's wired or wireless
network (AirOrangeX) to be protected by a current version
of antivirus software. Further information is located on the
ITS antivirus web page. Students will receive instructions on how to
register their computers on the SU network when they check into their residential facility.
Connecting from off-campus housing
Students who live off campus must subscribe to a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP) if
they would like to connect to the Internet and the SU network. The following ISPs are some
of the options available in the Syracuse area:
Information about connecting to the SU network from off-campus locations can be found on the
Remote Access web page.
Computing Hardware and Operating System Requirements [TOP]
Many of SU schools and colleges have specific computer
recommendations for their students, and students should refer to those recommendations when
purchasing a computer.
Supported computer operating systems:
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP with SP2 installed
- Macintosh OS X.4 and above
In addition, students will need to bring an Ethernet cable to campus in order to connect their
computer to the wired network. SU does not provide Ethernet cables.
SU's Wireless Network: AirOrangeX [TOP]
Students can access the AirOrangeX wireless network in academic, administrative and residential
buildings across campus. This secure network employs 802.1x technology. Visit the
AirOrangeX web page for more information, including registering a computer
on the network for the first time. Further information on network security is available on the
ITS wireless security web page.
SU Network User Responsibilities [TOP]
Students who use the Syracuse University network are responsible for reading and understanding
the University's Computing and Electronic Communications policy.
Areas of note are:
- Self-installed wireless access points
AirOrangeX is available in all residential facilities.
Installing commercially available wireless network access points in the residence halls
is strictly prohibited. Installation of these devices will disrupt the SU
network (wired and wireless) and result in a student's network port being disabled.
- Hacking
Any virus, port scanning, or computer hacking activities detected will be treated as a
violation of SU computing policy and will result in the student's computer being blocked
from the network until the matter can be resolved.
- Copyright infringement
Any reported downloading or sharing of illegal copyright protected data (music, movies,
software, games) will result in the student's computer being removed from the SU
network (wired and AirOrange) until the matter can be resolved. Further information is
available on SU's Copyright and File Sharing web page.
- Antivirus
Syracuse University requires all computers connected to the University's wired or wireless
network be protected by a current version of antivirus software. Further information
is available on the Antivirus software web page.
