What is Syracuse University’s policy about generative artificial intelligence (AI)?
Syracuse University has developed the following guidelines to ensure the ethical and responsible use of AI technologies by students, faculty, staff and vendors.
What AI tools are University students, faculty and staff allowed to use?
When a user is logged in with University credentials (NetID), Syracuse University supports the use of the following University-approved tools for University data:
- Microsoft Copilot Work or Web
- Google Gemini
- OpenAI ChatGPT Teams
- Anthropic Claude Team/Enterprise
- Adobe Firefly
- Gradescope
- Blackboard’s AI
- IBL mentorAI
University community members should not use University data when working in any other AI tools.
Can I store University data in my preferred cloud storage or AI service?
Many free cloud storage and AI services are not contracted with the University and have end-user agreements that do not protect the University. These services may NOT be used to store or share any classification of data other than data that is considered “public.”
How will I know if I am being asked to give a cloud-based application or service access to my data?
Microsoft has provided a tutorial on the “consent experience” for applications on its website. When in doubt, please contact your local information technology staff before granting access to an application.
