Watch Out for COVID-19 Phishing Scams

The Information Security Department at Syracuse University has seen an increase in reports of employees receiving phishing messages that use COVID-19 as a pretext to get users to click on links. The emails promise government checks as part of the federal stimulus package or ask employees to click links to complete a “COVID-19 Payroll Adjustment.” Clicking on the links in the email usually results in a compromise of the user’s password or an attempt to download malware. Syracuse University recently implemented Zoom videoconferencing for students, faculty and staff. This action provides another tool to allow the University community to remain connected during this time of remote learning and instruction. Security Operation Center Student Excels in National Cyber League

More than 5,300 high school and college students took part in the online National Cyber League competition from April 3-5. Only 17 scored higher than Syracuse University’s own Keyi “Kevin” Li, a student-employee at the ITS Security Operation Center (SOC) who is pursuing a graduate degree in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Li scored 2,720 points out of 3,000 possible with a 96.1% completion rating.

The National Cyber League tests students’ cybersecurity skills and know-how with a variety of challenges related to forensic data, ransomware attacks and more. Li shared a little about his experience and how his work at the SOC contributed to his remarkable performance. Continue Reading
