Orange Online: August 2022

Each month, ITS shares helpful tips and tricks with students in the “Orange Online” email series. We also collect this know-how you gotta know now on our blog …

The fall semester is less than two weeks away! The ITS team has worked throughout the summer in anticipation of another successful school year. We can’t wait to welcome you to campus!

If you haven’t left for campus yet, be sure to configure your multi-factor authentication (MFA) methods to ensure you retain access to your University accounts (email, Microsoft applications, etc.). ITS recommends you download and configure the Microsoft Authenticator app on the mobile device you will bring with you. You can learn more about MFA on Answers.

Throughout the semester, our Orange Online messages will provide updates and insights about how you can make the best use of technology. In addition, you can contact the ITS Help Desk (help@syr.edu or 315.443.2677) for any technology-related questions and follow ITS on Instagram for tips and tricks.

Getting Connected

ITS provides access to a wide range of computing services on campus and beyond. Whether you’re a new or returning student, we have put together a guide to getting connected, which includes instructions for connecting to campus networks, finding technical support and more.

Disconnecting Wireless Hotspots

ITS recommends only using a hotspot at home or while traveling. When someone uses a hotspot on campus, the signal competes with the AirOrangeX wireless network. Connecting to a campus network instead of a personal hotspot is a great way to improve the campus computing experience for everyone.

Campus Living: Gaming, Streaming and More

Do you know about the Gadgets&Games campus network for streaming devices and gaming systems? Have you tried out the SpectrumU video streaming service that delivers live TV to your device? Learn about these and other campus resources on the Campus Living page on Answers.

Finding Resources Around Campus

If you haven’t already, check out our digital maps on maps.syracuse.edu, where you can sort by a range of location types (buildings, computer labs, parking, dining options, etc.). You also can find wheelchair wayfinding routes by clicking on the “Wayfinding” button and selecting “Show Only Wheelchair Accessible Routes.” In addition, bus schedule information is available at subus.syr.edu.

ITS Service Center

Located at 1-227 CST in the Life Sciences Complex, the ITS Service Center offers a wide range of in-person support services. Visit the ITS Service Center website for more information, including support hours. While no products or software are sold at the ITS Service Center, the Campus Store features a range of technology options.

Beware of Phishing Scams

Phishing scams disguised as account termination warnings, job offers or requests for help circulate among the University community from time to time. Please remember that universities never ask for personal account information via email. In addition, ITS will never ask for your password via email. Any email communication asking for this type of information should be deleted. You can learn more by visiting the ITS Phish Bowl.
