A new year and a new semester offer opportunities to build new habits and skills. To help you take advantage of the resources available to you, ITS has put together some suggestions for how you can make safe and effective use of technology in your work, studies or free time.

  1. Check out the Online Success Toolkit. ITS experts have partnered with the Office of Online Student Success, the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, the Center for Online and Digital Learning, and other key campus departments to provide a one-stop shop for tips on online teaching and learning.
  2. Help yourself at Answers.syr.edu. You can access a wide array of self-service technical information and how-to instructions by visiting Answers, the University’s knowledge hub. The ITS Information Technology Support page is a great place to start.
  3. Strengthen your data security. The COVID-19 pandemic and the increased use of online learning, teaching and working solutions have highlighted the importance of IT security. Our Security 101 page provides tips for recognizing phishing attempts and other malicious attacks, as well as recommendations for passwords, secure file sharing and more.
  4. Manage your two-factor authentication. A key ingredient to data security, two-factor authentication is an added security feature that protects your accounts and confidential information by strengthening the sign-in process with an extra verification of identity, in addition to your username and password. Configuring your two-factor authentication ensures you retain access to your University accounts (email, Microsoft applications, etc.) wherever you go. If you have not already done so, you can manage your two-factor authentication at netid.syr.edu.
  5. Download the LiveSafe app. LiveSafe offers direct connectivity with the Department of Public Safety emergency dispatch center. The app features a function called “SafeWalk” that permits users to virtually share their location with friends as they walk to a destination. App users also can send tips regarding potentially unsafe situations or crimes in progress through the app.
  6. Put yourself on the map. You can find Syracuse University’s interactive campus map at maps.syracuse.edu. Featuring 3D renderings of exterior buildings and grounds, as well as interior building floor plans, the map includes way-finding to provide easy and efficient navigation around campus for the Syracuse University community. The map is compatible on both desktop and mobile devices.
  7. Keep your wellness in mind. The Barnes Center at The Arch offers a variety of tools and resources to help you practice mindfulness. Virtual resources available include guided meditation videos, yoga, pet therapy and Sanvello, the number one mobile app for stress, anxiety and depression management.
  8. Connect with ITS. You can followITS on Instagram for tips and tricks all year-round. You also can check out “Behind the Monitor,” the official ITS podcast, on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Good luck and good skill in 2021 from ITS!
